Why Clean-up For Investors' Meet Irks Bengaluru Residents

Locals say repairs and clean-ups should happen on a regular basis, not just for such occasions.

Bengaluru: Over the last few days, the potholed roads of Bengaluru's Central Business District are getting a makeover - the Invest Karnataka 2016, which is being held this week. But the people are less than pleased.

Madhu, who was shopping on the Central Commercial Street said a clean-up shouldn't be done only in view of an investor's meet. "You have to do it on a regular basis."

"It would be great if they would do it for the people and not just to show off," added another young woman, Mihika. "It would be nice to have the roads clean on a regular basis, rather than to show to a VIP."

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah says there are plans to improve infrastructure across the state, particularly in Bangalore.

"We have planned to have two elevated corridors in Bangalore city. It will cost about Rs 18,500 crores under PPP model and we also plan to have 50 Tender Sure roads in Bangalore city," he told NDTV. "Flyover and underpasses and bridges that we are going to have...."

There are plans to improve the power situation too, he said. "By July, the state will add 2,300 MW of power to the grid... In two more years we are going to make the city clean. We are going to solve the garbage problem," he added.

There are big hopes for big investments from the meet which will have seven partner countries.

The state's industries and tourism minister RV Deshpande told NDTV: "We are trying to clear as many projects as possible. Memorandums will be signed which are realistic. For example, Pepsi wants to put up a project in Mysore. I will sign because they have so many investments all over India and Karnataka."

Could one fallout of the meet be a cleaner city all the year round? Amna and Junaid, a young couple, certainly hope so.

"Hope it continues for the whole of the year. Not just for the VIPs but for the common people also, said Amna. Junaid added, "This looks like temporary make up. If it continues it is good."
