Bangalore: A bid to influence the Whitefield police to avoid subjecting the body of a man to a post-mortem examination resulted in unravelling a tale of betrayal, infidelity and murder.The police started a probe after they were pressured, albeit unsuccessfully, to hand over the body of Govinda Bhat, 30, who resided in a one BHK apartment in Vinayaka Nagar, with his childhood friend, Venkatesh Babu, 30.
Bhat, a service engineer with a private firm near ITPL, had died late on April 29. The police modified the case of unnatural death they had registered earlier to murder on November 23, after they arrested Bhat's widow and a student of fashion design, Sowmya Bhat, 28, and her lover, Babu.
On being informed, Sowmya and Bhat's father Shankara Narayana Bhat left their residence in Umilaya village near Belthangady to Bangalore. During the journey, she reportedly requested Shanakara to avoid post-mortem, saying the body would be badly mutilated. In Bangalore, she insisted that Bhat's was an accidental death. Inspector BN Gopalakrishna, however, was not convinced.
Gopalakrishna took a suo motu case on a forensic report, which suggested murder and arrested Babu the next day, followed by Sowmya. The two reportedly confessed to the crime. Sowmya used to stay with Bhat during holidays, and gradually fell for Babu. Bhat's nightshifts at work helped them cement their affair. They decided to eliminate Bhat so that they could live a life together, police said.
