Bengaluru: A woman's hand was allegedly chopped off by three persons in Bengaluru in a case of mistaken identity over a sand dispute at Tavarekere near in Bengaluru in Ramanagaram district, a senior police official said on friday.

A team had been formed for tracking down the accused who have been absconding after committing the crime, Ramanagara Superintendent of Police Chandragupta said.

The incident happened yesterday when the victim's husband was not at home, Chandraguta said adding the woman had been hospitalised and the hand re-attached.

The accused had picked up a fight against one Kumar and Nanje Gowda over sand dealing on July 1.

Yesterday, they had barged into the house of the victim and assaulted her with swords, mistaking her to be a relative of Kumar and Gowda, who are her tenants, the SP said.

She lost her left hand as she tried to defend herself from the attack, he said.

She was taken to a hospital with the chopped hand and doctors performed a surgery to re-attach it.
