The girl was reportedly shot dead by an office assistant who has been arrested.
Bengaluru: A young student in Bengaluru was shot dead at her school last night allegedly by a man who worked there and was arrested this afternoon, after going missing for several hours.
The 18-year-old victim, identified by the police as Gauthami, was shot on campus on the outskirts of the city. Her friend was injured.
Both teens were in their room on the third floor of the hostel at their school when Gauthami heard a knock at 10 pm and opened the door, said Police Commissioner MN Reddi.
"He entered one room and fired at the girl who died. Then tried to go into another room and fired a shot there," Mr Reddi said.
The police said initial investigations revealed that there might have been some tension between him and students as he tried to set rules for their behavior.
Mahesh, 41, was working in the institution for two years as an office assistant. Police are still investigating how he got hold of the gun - which has since been recovered - and the reason of the shooting.
The distraught father Gauthami broke down outside the school. "Ask anyone about Guatami. Hang me if my daughter has done anything wrong," he said. "How did the gun come inside? That is negligence."
Gauthami's friend, who is still in hospital, is out of danger. She had sustained an injury below her nose and needed facial reconstruction, the police said.
