কেন বিয়ে করেননি? মুখ খুললেন রতন টাটা

হিউম্যানস অফ বম্বেকে সাক্ষাৎকার দিয়েছেন টাটা এমিরেটাস গ্রুপের চেয়ারম্যান রতন টাটা (Ratan Tata)। তিনটি কিস্তিতে এই সাক্ষাৎকার দিয়েছেন ওই অশীতিপর উদ্যোগপতি। সম্প্রতি তাঁর সাক্ষাৎকারের তৃতীয় তথা শেষ কিস্তি বেরিয়েছে। সেই কিস্তিতে তাঁর অবসরজীবন (Life after Retirement)  নিয়ে অনেক কথা বলা আছে। কেন তিনি বিয়ে করেননি আর কীভাবে টাটা ন্যানো (Tata Nano) তৈরির পরিকল্পনা মাথায় এল; এসব নিয়ে বিস্তৃত আলোচনা করেছেন রতন টাটা। তিনি বলেন, " টাটা গ্রুপ অফ কোম্পানিজের ব্যবসার পরিধি ও পরিসর বাড়াতে আমি নিজেকে সমর্পিত করেছিলাম। তাই বিয়ে করা হয়নি। তবে দু-তিন জন মহিলাকে পছন্দ হয়েছিল। বিয়ের কথা এগিয়েছিল। কিন্তু পরে দেখলাম ওদের আমার জীবনযাত্রার সঙ্গে মানিয়ে চলতে অসুবিধা হবে। তাই আর বিয়ে করিনি।"

তিনি বলেছেন, টাটা সংস্থার কর্মরতদের জীবন যাত্রার মানের উন্নতি হয়েছ। কিন্তু সংস্থাগুলো যে এলাকার; তার স্থানীয় মানুষের জীবন যাত্রার মানের কোনও উন্নতি হয়নি।  উদাহরণস্বরূপ রতন টাটা বলেছেন, জামশেদপুরে আমাদের কর্মীরা ধারে-ভারে বেড়েছিলেন। কিন্তু আশপাশের গ্রামগুলর কোনও উন্নয়ন হয়নি। আমাদের লক্ষ্য ছিল ওদেরও জীবনযাত্রার মানের উন্নয়ন ঘটানো।তাঁর দাবি, "সস্তায় ক্যান্সার চিকিৎসা থেকে গ্রাম ভারতের উন্নয়ন; মানুষের জন্য যা যা করতে পারবে, সেটাই করবে টাটা ট্রাস্ট।"

ন্যানো প্রসঙ্গে বলতে গিয়ে টাটা বলেছেন, আমি দেখতাম ঝড়-জল- বৃষ্টিতে একটা পরিবার বাইকে চেপে ঘুরছে। সওয়ারি তিন-চার জন। সেই কষ্ট লাঘব করতে এবং জীবনের ঝুঁকি কমাতে আমরা বিকল্প আনার কথা ভাবি। যখন ন্যানো প্রথমে বাজারে ছাড়া হয়, তখন দাম একটু বেশি ছিল। কিন্তু আমি প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছিলাম স্বল্প মুল্যে সেই গাড়ি বাজারে আনব। আর সেই কথা রেখেছি। আমি এখনও সেই গাড়ির জন্য গর্বিত আর সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছি বাজারে থাকবে সেই গাড়ি।

যদি প্রত্যাশাপূরণে ব্যার্থ টাটা ন্যানো। নিরাপত্তাজনিত একাধিক অভিযোগে বিদ্ধ এই গাড়ি। ইঞ্জিনে আগুন লেগে একাধিকবার দুর্ঘটনার কবলে পড়েছে এই গাড়ি। 

On the personal front, Mr Tata revealed that he came close to marriage two or three times, but never went ahead with it as he was completely dedicated to his work. "I was either always at Bombay House or travelling," he said. "I came close to marriage with 2-3 different partners, but I couldn't go through with it because they would have to really change and adjust to my lifestyle and that didn't sit right with me."

Now, when he is retired, Mr Tata says his lifestyle has changed again, and it's not about playing golf or sipping cocktails at the beach. For him, he says, the urge to do more has never been greater.

"From affordable cancer treatment, to looking into making the lives in rural India easier — I'm looking forward to this chapter of making it happen at the Tata Trusts."

Mr Tata concluded his interview by offering a piece of 'advice'. "Leave the advice aside and do what is the right thing, even if it isn't the easiest thing to do," he said. "When you look back at your life, that's what's going to matter the most. Doing the right thing."

Ratan Tata currently serves as Chairman of Tata Trusts, the philanthropic arm of Tata Group. He joined social media in October last year after a long hiatus from public life.
