Indore : A 40-year-old woman weighing 350 kg got a new lease of life after she underwent a bariatric surgery, perhaps the first time such a procedure has been conducted in Asia, to remove the excess flab, at a private medical institution in Indore.
The surgery was performed through laproscopic method by a 30-member team led by Bariatric surgeon Dr Mohit Bhandari at the city-based Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences.
"This is for the first time in Asia that a woman weighing 350 kg went under the scalpel for reducing weight through laproscopic surgery method," Dr Mohit told PTI.
The woman was suffering from diabetes, sleep apnea and pulmonary hypertension since last five years and her life was confined to her bed only, he said.
"After the two-hour long surgery the condition of the 40-year-old woman is stable and we are hopeful that her weight would reduce to somewhere around 150 kgs in next five months," Dr Mohit said.
Before surgery her BMI (Body Mass Index) was 132 which is five times higher than a normal person.
According to dietitians, persons having BMI of 25 are considered as "normal", while those above 25 and below 30 "weighty" and those with BMI above 30 are classified as "heavyweight".
Bariatric surgery includes a variety of procedures performed on people who are obese.
