Bhopal: The Vice Chancellor of Maharishi Vedic University, Girish Chandra Verma, has been arrested in Bhopal for allegedly sexually exploiting a former woman employee since 1998. A city court sent him to three-day police custody today.

The woman, who was a teacher with the group's Vidya Mandir School in Ratanpur near Bhopal, has alleged that Mr Verma blackmailed her and sexually abused and raped her for 15 years. She also said that when she reported the matter to school authorities, she started receiving death threats.

The woman approached the State Woman Commission and the police in March this year. Nine months later, in August, Mr Verma, who is also the secretary of the school in which the woman taught, was interrogated and was finally arrested on Sunday night.

"It's a conspiracy against me, some of our ex-employees and some from across India are involved. I have documentary evidence of this which I will present in the court. Very soon I will make email conversations public, revealing the truth. I have even filed defamation case against her," said Mr Verma.

The victim's husband was formerly employed with the Maharishi Group; he worked as Mr Verma's personal assistant and used to accompany him for work. He found out about what her wife was going in 2011, almost 13 years after her nightmare had started. He has alleged that Mr Verma threatened his wife to give in to his wishes or he will frame her husband in an embezzlement case. The man also says that the vice chancellor reportedly filmed her in objectionable position and blackmailed her. The husband even accused Mr Verma of attempting to sodomise him once.

The family now wants Mr Verma to be punished for what he has done and all the documents and objectionable photographs to be returned to them. The next hearing of the case is on January 1, 2014.
