Bhopal:
In Madhya Pradesh, fashion shows are already banned in government colleges and a few have even forced their girl students to wear uniforms but a government-run college in Bhopal takes the cake.
'No more
salwar-kurtas or jeans while on the campus, only
sarees'.
This diktat by the college management, all in the name of what it calls promoting Indian tradition, is for the college teachers. What's ironical is that it has been issued in a government college named after a feminist icon of her times, Sarojini Naidu.
"The teachers should wear
sarees because it is an Indian traditional dress and they should wear it," said Principal of Sarojini Naidu college, Dr Shobha Maroo.
The order, however, hasn't gone down well with both students and teachers.
"There should be no dress code, no restriction. It should be voluntary," said one of the teachers.
The teachers and students are calling it a violation of their right to decide what they should wear.
"Why is tradition imposed only on women? Tradition and culture is by values not by clothes," a student said.
This might not be the end as the college management is also contemplating a dress code for the students -
salwar kurta from the next academic session.
