Lokayukta police raid reveals assets of DIG Prisons run into crores

Bhopal: The Lokayukta police raided the house of Deputy Inspector General, Prisons, Umesh Gandhi in Bhopal today and claimed to have discovered assets worth crores of rupees, disproportionate to known sources of income.

A team of Lokayukta sleuths carried out a search at his house in the Old Jail premises and houses of his brother Ajay Gandhi in Subhash Nagar in Bhopal and Ramgopal in Sagar. The raid, which started at around 6 am, went on till evening. The team has estimated the worth of undeclared assets to be over 25 crores.

Lokayukta Inspector Naveen Awasthi told NDTV "We had received many anonymous complaints against DIG Umesh Gandhi for misusing his post and possessing assets disproportionate to his earnings. The Lokayukta team has seized fixed deposits worth 2 crores, jewellery worth 10 lakhs, 4 lakhs in cash, live insurance policies worth 40 lakhs, 85 lakhs in bank account, documents of six plots in Bhopal and Indore and documents of five houses and shops in Indore Bhopal, Katni."

DIG Umesh Gandhi's brother Ajay, who is a constable, claims that the assets seized are not unaccountable, and that he will give the details to the Lokayukta police. However he denied being the owner of the jewellery and the property whose deeds were recovered from his house during the raid.
