New Delhi: Parliament today remembered the victims of Bhopal gas tragedy on the 31st anniversary, with Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari saying the man-made tragedy of "unparalleled magnitude" continues to haunt the victims as he pitched for stricter regulations to prevent such tragedies.
Members in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha expressed their empathy and support to the victims. They also stood in silence for a short while.
In the Rajya Sabha, Mr Ansari said on this day, the House solemnly remembers the innocent victims of Bhopal tragedy 31 years ago.
He said the scars of the man-made tragedy of unparalleled magnitude continues to haunt the victims.
"Today we are reminded of magnitude of hazard due to industrial negligence," he said calling for stricter regulations to prevent such tragedies.
Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said the catastrophic consequences were so deadly that many children who were born later were afflicted with various ailments.
The Bhopal gas tragedy in 1984, that saw leakage of Methyl Isocyanate gas and other toxins, is one of the worst industrial disasters.
