Bhubaneswar: Truck rams into vehicles, three dead, 10 injured

Bhubaneswar: At least three persons were killed and about 10 others critically injured after a truck rammed into several vehicles near the busy Khandagiri square on NH-5 in Bhubaneswar today, police said.

The mishap struck when the truck coming down Khandagiri hill slope went out of control due to a suspected brake failure and hit about eight vehicles stationary near the traffic junction, they said.

Police said one person died on the spot while the injured were immediately taken to the Capital Hospital and other private hospitals for treatment and the condition of some of them was stated to be critical.

Hospital sources said three persons were killed in the mishap and others were undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, in protest against the accident, a large number of people staged a road blockade demanding proper regulation of traffic on the junction, considered one of the most busiest places in the city.

As a result, vehicular movement was disrupted on the busy highway for quite some time, Assistant Commissioner of Police P K Patnaik said.

He said police officials had rushed to the spot with reinforcements to pacify the irate people and clear the traffic.

"The situation is tense in the area but under control," police said.
