Bhubaneswar:
A girl student committed suicide after being allegedly stripped by her teacher over stolen money, in front of her classmates in Bargarh district of Orissa.
Official sources said today the class eight student of Khundeigola High School under Riamal block was "thoroughly searched" for cash, before 25 other students of her class by a lady teacher on December 28, after another classmate complained that Rs 110, kept inside her bag, was missing.
Her body was found at her home next day, the sources said.
However, in an official complaint, the girl's family alleged she was "stripped" during the search and unable to bear with the humiliation, took poison the next day.
The Secretary of School and Mass Education department Aparajita Sarangi has ordered a departmental inquiry into the matter.
A separate probe was on by district project coordinator, Sarba Siksha Abhijan (SSA).
"We have received both the reports. But nowhere, it is confirmed that the girl was stripped," a senior official at the school and mass education department here said today.
He said both the probes conducted by the circle inspector of schools and the district project co-ordinator of SSA confirmed that the victim was thoroughly "searched and not stripped" and money was recovered from her, but could not pinpoint the reason of death.
Though the girl was later allowed to go home with mild warning by the school authorities, she seemed upset since then, the official said.
