With heat wave conditions intensifying, most areas of Odisha continued to sizzle under gruelling temperatures as the mercury soared to 45.9 degree Celsius in the capital Bhubaneshwar on Monday.
Normal life was severely affected in Bhubaneswar as the capital city recorded its highest temperature in the last seven years, the meteorological centre here said.
As 30 deaths due to sun-stroke were reported from various parts of the state during this summer so far, the mercury touched 46 degree Celsius in the coal belt of Talcher and Baripada in Mayurbhanj district, the sources said.
In Baripada town, about 1,000 bats were found dead in a park due to intense heat, they said.
Sweltering heat swept the entire western Odisha with the mercury touching 45.2 degree Celsius in Hirakud, 45 degree Celsius in Sundargarh and Bolangir, 45.5 degree Celsius in Bhawanipatna, 44.8 degree Celsius in Sambalpur and 44.5 degree Celsius in Jharsuguda, the sources added.
