Naveen Patnaik will dedicate a Bhubaneswar road in the memory of Mother Teresa.

Bhubaneswar: A road will be named after Mother Teresa in Bhubaneswar, coinciding with her canonisation ceremony at the Vatican on Sunday.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will dedicate the fly-over road linking Satya Nagar and Cuttack-Puri road in her memory.

The road would be named Mother Teresa Road, said a statement from the office of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Archbishop.

The decision in this regard was taken by Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation at the request of Odisha Catholic Bishops' Council (OCBC), said Chairman Archbishop John Barwa of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar to BMC.

"We are grateful to Odisha government for naming the road after Mother Teresa. It is our tribute to Mother Teresa for her invaluable contribution to humanity through her service and charity," Mr Barwa, head of Odisha Catholic Church, said.

"Through this naming of a road, we all may remember the contribution of Mother Teresa and strive to serve the humanity in our own way in life," Mr Barwa added.

Pope Francis will officially declare Mother Teresa as saint on September 4.

In Odisha, Missionaries of Charity, the organization created by Mother Teresa, has 18 houses.

She had first visited Bhubaneswar in 1974 and met the then Chief Minister Nandini Satpathy and Governor Akbar Ali Khan.

Since then she visited Odisha several times, the statement said.
