His ready-to-harvest crop was damaged in the unseasonal rain, occurring in the state since November 13, and he had become apprehensive that he would not be able to repay the loan.

Kendrapara: A farmer allegedly committed suicide in Kendrapara today, the first such incident in the coastal district of Odisha, the police said.

The family members of the farmer, Bhabagrahi Sutar (48), claimed that he took the extreme step due to crop loss in the unseasonal rain, they added.

Mr Sutar allegedly ended his life by hanging himself at Namatara village and a case of unnatural death was lodged in this regard, the police said.

An FIR, lodged on the basis of a complaint from the deceased's family members, alleged that crop loss due to the unseasonal rain prompted the farmer to end his life.

They claimed that the farmer was under a severe stress as he had borrowed Rs 1 lakh for cultivating his two-acre crop land. His ready-to-harvest crop was damaged in the unseasonal rain, occurring in the state since November 13, and he had become apprehensive that he would not be able to repay the loan.

Kendrapara Sub-Collector Kanhu Charan Dhir said the local tehsildar has been asked to probe the incident and submit a report.
