A goodbye message from PM Modi

The Obamas leave Delhi. Next stop, Saudi Arabia where they will meet the new King Salman

One last look at the Beast

Goodbye POTUS. A last namaste, and then a farewell wave

The Beast drives up. POTUS and FLOTUS step onto the red carpet

Air Force One is ready and waiting for POTUS and FLOTUS. On the runway is a farewell committee that included Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh, BJP's Piyush Goyal, who acted as Minister-in-Waiting on this trip, and S Jaishankar, India's Ambassador to the US

As POTUS and FLOTUS prepare to say goodbye to India:

Among the gifts that POTUS will be taking home with him:

In his townhall address, POTUS referenced two of India's sporting heroes: "India takes great pride in people like Milkha Singh, Mary Kom, Kailash Satyarthi. No dearth of talent in India."

Responses from The Flying Sikh and Magnificent Mary:

16-year-old Vishal, son of a labourer, on meeting President Obama when he visited India in 2010:
Backstage at Siri Fort, POTUS and FLOTUS met three children rescued by Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi's Bachpan Bachao organisation - 8-year-old Deepak who lost a finger while working on a farm as a child labourer, 12-year-old Ayub who was forced to work in a button factory, and 14-year-old Payal who refused to get married, is a bal sarpanch and works to prevent child marriage in her village

After the speech, a sea of cameraphones and waving hands

Seems like all POTUS has been talking about is the display of stunt-biking by Janbaz, the BSF's daredevils on two wheels, at yesterday's parade on Rajpath. As they rode past, cheered and applauded, President Obama gave them a thumbs up.

At the Business Summit last evening, POTUS referred to Janbaz saying, "I won't be riding a motorcycle tonight."

At his townhall address this morning, he referred to them again. "The Secret Service won't let me ride motorcycles, especially not on my head," he quipped.

Here are pictures of Janbaz's trick-riding that so impressed POTUS:

This is Vishal, the son of a labourer the Obamas met when they visited Humayun's Tomb in 2010. Vishal is now 16 and in school. He wants to join the army later. "Have hope for Indian youth, believe in a young boy who knows he has a chance as long as he keeps studying," said President Obama

POTUS borrows a dialogue from Shah Rukh Khan

The Obamas walk off-stage hand-in-hand and into the audience, shaking hands with people

I want more American students coming to India than Indian students coming to America: President Obama
The last time we were in India, Michelle and I visited Humayun's Tomb where we met labourers and their families and children. We met one young boy called Vishal who is now 16 years old and wants to join the army when he grows up: President Obama
Getting grey hair now, was more youthful when I entered office: President Obama
We will succeed as long as we empower our young. Here in India, most people are under 35 years old and India is one of the world's most populous countries. So you, young Indians, are going to define the world: President Obama
India will succeed as long as it's not splintered along religious lines: President Obama
Our diversity is our strength and we have to guard against being divided along sectarian or any other lines: President Obama
No society is immune from the darkest impulses of men and too often religion is used to tap into those instead of the light of God: President Obama
Nations are more successful when their women are successful: President Obama
Our nations are strongest when we see that we are all God's children, all equal in his eyes: President Obama
The girl who commanded the Guard of Honour, it's a great sign of strength: President Obama
We remember the wisdom of Gandhiji who said, 'for me the different religions are beautiful flowers in the same garden, branches of the same tree': President Obama
Our daughters deserve the same chances as our sons: President Obama
In US, we are still working to ensure our women get equal opportunities. In India, it is the wives and mothers who hold the family together: President Obama
Michelle is not afraid to speak her mind or tell me when I'm wrong, which happens very often: President Obama
A young boy delivering lunch on a bicycle, a young girl hauling a bucket of water. Even as we live in a world of inequality, there is still hope if the grandson of a cook can be President and a tea-seller can become Prime Minister. Everyone has a chance: President Obama
My grandfather was a cook in the British army. Branches of Michelle's family were slaves as well as slave owners: President Obama
America wants to be India's partner as you protect the health of the people and the beauty of the nation: President Obama
We will continue to help India deal with the impact of climate change because no country should have to bear that burden alone: President Obama
If we are going to be global partners, our two nations must do more around the world: President Obama
We support resolution to include India as permanent member of the UN Security Council: President Obama
World will be safer if our two democracies stand together: President Obama
Let's put clean and renewable energy into the world, clean water that every child can drink: President Obama
With India leading the way, we can end the injustice of extreme poverty around the world: President Obama
I believe that our two democracies, the world's oldest and largest democracies, can stand together: President Obama
I believe that America can be India's best partner: President Obama
US has the largest Indian disapora in the world. 3 million proud Indian-Americans and they make America stronger: President Obama
We danced to bhangra, brought Diwali to the White House: President Obama
More than a 100 years ago, Swami Vivekananda helped bring Hinduism and yoga to America. he came to my hometown of Chicago. He began his speech with 'Sisters and brothers of America," so let me begin today by saying "Sisters and brothers of India": President Obama
Senorita, bade bade deshon mein , you know what I mean: POTUS makes DDLJ reference

The audience of 2,000 includes Delhi University students, activists and representatives of think tanks
The Siri Fort crowd is being entertained by piped music while they wait for POTUS

Full house at Siri Fort. Waiting for POTUS

In his address, POTUS will likely focus on Indo-US relations and the importance of diversity as a democratic value. He may or may not take questions from his audience of 2,000
Obama's audience queues up outside Siri Fort

Among the gifts that were exchanged on this visit was a decades-old recording of African-American singer Marian Anderson singing Lead Kindly Light, one of Mahatma Gandhi's favourite hymns

The theme of President Obama's address at Siri Fort is 'India and America: The Future We Can Build Together'
A moment from President Obama's Sunday in Delhi

Yesterday, POTUS and PM Modi recorded a 35-minute long episode of Mann Ki Baat which will air on radio at 8pm. In the episode, they answer questions received by the PMO
Ratan Tata on last evening's Indo-US Business Summit:

POTUS is expected to address an audience of 2,000 in Siri Fort Auditorium at 10.30am. He will travel in the Beast, his special armoured car, to Siri Fort and then to Palam Airport where Air Force One is waiting to fly him out. The Obamas were to have visited Agra this afternoon but have cut short their visit in order to make a stopover in Saudi Arabia and meet the new King Salman
Meanwhile, here's what one person in Obama's entourage did yesterday. The Namesake actor Kal Penn, whose real name is Kalpen Modi, met the Prime Minister and then savoured some of the delicacies on offer in Purani Dilli:

Backstage at Siri Fort, President Obama will meet Kailash Satyarthi and three children rescued by his NGO. POTUS and Mr Satyarthi are both recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize. The children who will meet POTUS are:

US President Barack Obama will conclude his three-day India visit with an address for a select gathering. Preparations galore at the Siri Fort Auditorium.

President Barack Obama's India Visit: Delhi Police Traffic Advisory - Tuesday, January 27, 2015.

  • A Delhi Police traffic advisory for Tuesday, January 27 has advised commuters to avoid August Kranti Marg, in south Delhi in view of US President Barack Obama's movement for an event.
  • President Obama is scheduled to attend a programme at the Siri Fort auditorium.
  • There would be traffic restrictions at several points on August Kranti Marg.
  • Movement of vehicles, however, would be allowed on the Ring Road.
  • The Delhi Police has also advised citizens to avoid the stretch of road from Dhaula Kuan to IGI Airport in the afternoon.
  • The road to the airport will remain closed tomorrow for around 40 minutes during President Obama's departure from New Delhi.
Republic Day Recap: 'The Beast', Barack Obama's Official Car, was a Big Hit Among Children

Here are some interesting facts about the 'Beast', in case you missed it earlier:

  • 'The Beast', US President Barack Obama's official car is also known as 'Cadillac One'.
  • It has been driving with both the US and the Indian flag since the arrival of President Obama.
  • It looks like a Cadillac, but that is it. It is not really a derivative of the Cadillac DTS as it seems, since it only borrows styling from that model. Underneath the limo exterior is a Chevrolet Kodiak - which is a medium sized truck (sort of the same size as our Tata 407, but more sophisticated).
  • Anyone can buy an armoured limo. Yes BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz even sell those in India. The Beast goes well beyond regular armouring with an 8-inch thick body plating and 5-inch thick bulletproof windows. The car itself weighs 8 tonnes.
  • The doors swing on special heavy-duty hinges as they weigh as much as doors on a Boeing 757 aircraft.
  • The massive weight needs every horsepower the 6.5 litre Duramax diesel engine can offer. The Beast uses this diesel truck engine since it can take to varying purity levels of the more commonly available fuel type globally.
  • It's a 7-seater - yup just like all "family MPVs"! So this one can accommodate POTUS, his driver, chief Secret Service agent and four others too. So FLOTUS, the girls and grandma maybe?
  • Goodyear makes special Kevlar-coated run-flat tyres for the Beast - to withstand puncture and even run when shot out.
  • The fuel tank is covered with a special foam that prevents any impact-related explosion. It's boot has special oxygen tanks and firefighting equipment.
  • In the event of a chemical attack, the car cuts off outside air completely, and keeps the cabin supplied with breathable air until it is safe to open the doors again.
  • Night vision cameras, teargas cannons and a shotgun are standard on the Beast. It also houses a special compartment to hold pouches of POTUS' blood type.
  • It runs with Washington DC plates - everywhere it goes.
Republic Day Recap: President Obama was fascinated by the 'BSF Daredevils' riders at the Republic Day on Monday, however he said he would 'not drive' a motorbike after watching the stunts performed by the riders at the parade.

  • "I would, by the way, not drive a motorcycle after watching those incredible acrobats," Obama said, clearly overwhelmed by the performance of the 'Jaanbaaz' bike riders and their daring stunts.
  • President Obama, and First Lady Michelle Obama gave a thumbs up to the BSF daredevils, who are famed for their formation of a human pyramid on moving bikes during their stunning display at the parade.
  • "Today's ceremony and the parade were truly spectacular, a moving tribute to India's founding, its democracy, its progress," President Obama said.
A recap of President Obama's day:

He was chief guest at this morning's Republic Day parade, braving the relentless Delhi rain and chill. Michelle Obama also attended, wearing a black coat dress and a red scarf. Highlights of the parade included all-women contingents from the services, a camel-mounted band, tableaux that depicted many of PM Modi's pet projects, the Indian Air Force's fly past, and motorcycle daredevilry from the BSF's stunt riders.

At about 4pm, the Obamas visited President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan for tea. FLOTUS changed into a flowered dress and cropped jacket. The Obamas had tea, shook hands, chatted to other guests and waved to the cameras.

At about 6pm, POTUS made the short journey from the Maurya Sheraton Hotel where he is staying to the Taj Palace next door to meet India's top CEOs with PM Modi

The BSF stunt riders from this morning's parade clearly made an impression on POTUS. Not only did he give them a thumbs up as they rode past, he said at the beginning of his address at the Business Summit: "I won't be arriving on a motorbike this evening"
