Sonia Gandhi visits rape victim's family, rejects khap panchayat's stand Congress president Sonia Gandhi arrived exactly as scheduled at 10 am to visit the family of a Dalit girl who committed suicide after she was gang-raped in Haryana's Jind district over the weekend. Her visit ended just as news arrived of another two rapes being reported from the state.
Mrs Gandhi also rejected the recommendation of a khap panchayat in Haryana which said that to check rapes, young men and women should get married very young so that their "sexual desires find safe outlets."

Meanwhile, two more rapes have been reported in Haryana. While a minor was raped in Panipat, in Ambala, a widow was allegedly raped. The police have registered a case, however, no arrests have been made so far. This takes the tally of reported rapes in Haryana over the past one month to 13. The reports also come on a day when Congress President Sonia Gandhi visits the rape victims in Jind and their families.
