"She hugged me and said 'It wasn't just you who lost a daughter...she was my child too'," said the mother of the teen who set herself on fire after being raped in a home near her own, reportedly with a police constable making sure she could not escape her captors.

Sonia Gandhi gave her sympathies to the family. She met all the family members and told them that the entire state government is with them. She said she will ensure that the guilty will be punished. Sonia ji said that laws by the judiciary are final and binding and Khaps don't make laws Her coming here should not be seen in the light of vote bank politics.

Sonia Gandhi visits rape victim's family, rejects khap panchayat's stand
Congress president Sonia Gandhi arrived exactly as scheduled at 10 am to visit the family of a Dalit girl who committed suicide after she was gang-raped in Haryana's Jind district over the weekend. Her visit ended just as news arrived of another two rapes being reported from the state.
Mrs Gandhi also rejected the recommendation of a khap panchayat in Haryana which said that to check rapes, young men and women should get married very young so that their "sexual desires find safe outlets."  

Khap panchayats are a group of village elders who exert huge control over social norms and traditions in rural areas.  Their word serves as law.

Meanwhile, two more rapes have been reported in Haryana. While a minor was raped in Panipat, in Ambala, a widow was allegedly raped. The police have registered a case, however, no arrests have been made so far. This takes the tally of reported rapes in Haryana over the past one month to 13. The reports also come on a day when Congress President Sonia Gandhi visits the rape victims in Jind and their families.

Mrs Gandhi is being accompanied by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. The police have already barricaded roads in the village and the house.
The village gets ready to receive Congress President Sonia Gandhi who will be accompanied by the Congress MP from Sirsa Ashok Tanwar. heavy police presence is seen in the Sacha Kheda village and even en route.
