A truck ran over labourers while they were sleeping on a pavement in Chandigarh.
Chandigarh:
Five labourers from Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh were killed and three others injured when a truck ran over them while they were sleeping on a pavement in Chandigarh.
The incident occurred past midnight in Chandigarh's Transport Chowk traffic light-point when the men, four of them from Rajasthan and one from UP, were sleeping on the pavement, Assistant Superintendent of Police (East) Guriqbal Singh Sidhu said today, adding three other labourers were also injured.
He said that the truck driver was absconding after the accident, but one of his accomplices was arrested by the police.
"The labourers were sleeping when the truck ploughed into them. The accident occurred near the dead end of the road," Mr Sidhu said.
Asked if they suspect the truck driver was inebriated, the ASP said, "Investigations in this regard are on". A case has been registered, he said.
