Chandigarh : Unable to cope with the stigma of elopement of his daughter just a week before her marriage, a man allegedly committed suicide while his wife and son were battling for their lives after the three of them consumed poison.
The marriage of the girl was to be solemnised on December 7 but she eloped with another man earlier this week, SP (Karnal) Rakesh Arya said.
The family members, upset over the development, took the extreme step in their Sikri village yesterday, he said.
Asked if there was any caste angle in the incident, Mr Arya said, "We are investigating. So far, no one from the girl's family has come forward with any statement."
