Chandigarh: In the wake of the recent jailbreak at Nabha prison in Punjab, concrete steps are being are being taken to beef up the security in the prisons in Haryana, state Director General of Prisons Yashpal Singh today said.
"These include deployment of additional security personnel and strengthening of internal security management," an official release quoted the Haryana's DGP as saying.
He said with a view to prevent incidents such as the one which took place at Nabha in Patiala district, one PCR van had been deployed in every jail.
Mr Singh said that new jails were being constructed in Panipat and Rewari with a capacity to hold 2,000 inmates, and were likely to be completed by March, 2018.
"Apart from this, land has been acquired in Mewat for a new jail, the construction of which would soon begin," he added.
In a sensational jailbreak incident on November 27, a group of armed men in police uniform had attacked the Nabha jail in Punjab's Patiala district and fled with six inmates including Khalistan Liberation Front chief Harminder Mintoo.
However, a day after the incident, Mr Mintoo was arrested from Delhi.
