Chandigarh: An estimated 30-35 percent voter turnout was recorded in the municipal elections in Punjab on  Sunday till 2 pm, officials said in Chandigarh. The ruling SAD-BJP combine is in power in the outgoing municipal council.

Stakes are high for the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance, which won the assembly elections January this year, and the opposition Congress for the control of the municipal corporations of Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar and Patiala.

There are nearly 25 lakh enlisted voters in the municipal poll. The ruling combine is in power in the outing council in all the four cities.

Except for incidents of violence in Ludhiana and Jalandhar, the polling remained largely peaceful till afternoon.

Tight security arrangements were made by the Punjab Police in view of the elections.
