At Silicon Valley, PM Narendra Modi's Digital Dream Gets Many Shares, Likes

San Jose, California: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today met the world's top tech chiefs, including India-born Satya Nadella and Sundar Pichai, and shared his plans for digital India in a massive event at Silicon Valley, followed by dinner with 350 business leaders.

  1. "Social media is reducing social barriers. It connects people on the strength of human values, not identities. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram are the new neighbourhoods of our new world," PM Modi said at the Digital India dinner.

  2. The tech leaders that the PM met included Adobe's Shantanu Narayen, Qualcomm's Paul Jacobs, Cisco's John Chambers, Microsoft's Satya Nadella and Google's Sundar Pichai.

  3. "Now it is time for us to collectively empower people from all over the world," Satya Nadella said, outlining Microsoft's plans to partner with individual states and tech companies in India.

  4. Google CEO Sundar Pichai said India was the fastest growing "startup nation" in the world. "PM Modi understands that technology is an enabler for massive change, the kind that India needs right now," Mr Pichai said.

  5. "We believe you will change the world and change India," said Cisco CEO John Chambers.

  6. PM Modi earlier met Apple CEO Tim Cook and visited a plant of Tesla Motors. Earlier in the day, he received a warm welcome on his arrival to Silicon Valley - the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 33 years.

  7. "We have a unique tie with India. Our founder Steve Jobs went to India for inspiration," Mr Cook told PM Modi during their meeting.

  8. PM Modi visited the Tesla Motors plant to see the inventions on renewable energy made by the makers of trend-setting electric cars. He was given a tour in a battery-operated cart by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

  9. The highlight of PM Modi's five-day US tour will be a townhall at the Facebook headquarters and a visit to the Google campus on Sunday. Later, he will interact with the Indian community at the SAP Centre in San Jose. The session is expected to be attended by 18,000 people.

  10. Before leaving for Silicon Valley, PM Modi held a high-powered summit with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff. The three nations, along with India make up what is known as the G-4 group - countries which back each other's bid for permanent seats at the UN Security Council or UNSC.
