Here are 10 developments in the story:
The "Swachh Sarvekshan-2016" ranks 73 cities on cleanliness and sanitation.
Urban development Venkaiah Naidu will announce the results of the survey, which covers cities that have over 10 lakh people.
The survey is also expected to reveal the impact of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Swachh Bharat" mission launched two years ago.
In 2014, the government's "Swachh Bharat" survey covered 476 cities with a population of at least one lakh.
But the survey was considered less than fair because a small city like Damoh in Madhya Pradesh ranked at the bottom of a list that also included Greater Mumbai and Chennai.
For a more fair comparison, the government has picked 53 cities that have a population of 10 lakhs and more, besides capital cities.
Along with the announcement of the "cleanliness merit list", 15 top performers in different categories will also be felicitated by the central government.
Cities will be ranked as "Leaders" or "Aspiring Leaders"- cities close to catching up with Leaders - or "slow movers" who are trailing and need to cover a lot of ground to improve sanitation.
A senior official in the urban development ministry said: "Traditionally towns and cities in south and west India have been cleaner than their peers in other regions. The survey will prove whether this pattern continues or whether it is changing."
The survey will measure cities on six parametres including waste management and availability of enough toilets.
