Outgoing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will formally resign at 12:30 pm tomorrow, after meeting his cabinet.
Sources say Dr Singh will also address the nation after meeting President Pranab Mukherjee.
Mr Modi, who was declared the BJP's prime ministerial candidate a year ago, is likely to take oath next week.
The BJP's winning MPs are likely to meet tomorrow and formally elect Mr Modi as their leader.
The Rashtrapati Bhawan has said it is up to the prime minister designate to choose the date of his swearing in.
