Kollam, Kerala: The Kerala police's multitude of lapses led to the massive fire at the temple in Kollam, where nearly 110 people were killed and 1,000 injured, said furious judges today at the state's high court.

Here are the 10 latest developments:

  1. The High Court has, for now, not banned fireworks at temples, as requested by one of its judges, but said noisy firecrackers cannot be used after sunset anywhere in the state.

  2. The court said that police failed to provide basic safety to devotees who had gathered at the Kollam temple late on Saturday night; this amounts to a violation of human rights, the judges said. They also said they are disinclined to "trust the police" and are considering asking the CBI to take over the investigation.

  3. The court said that investigators who are on the case currently should also examine the possible "role of anti-nationals" in the tragedy which occurred on Saturday night, when thousands of people had gathered at the Puttingal Devi temple for a lavish fireworks display that coincides with a major festival.

  4. The government and police have said that temple officials ignored a ban on fireworks and went ahead anyway. Did a single policeman not notice the explosives that were collected for the show, the court asked today.

  5. They questioned how the police ignored the huge stash of fireworks that was accumulated at the temple in Kollam for a lavish display to coincide with the annual festival on Saturday night.

  6. Early on Sunday morning, a stray spark landed on a cache of fireworks and disaster ensued. Huge explosions brought down a building at the temple as people scrambled for their lives in darkness with a total power outage.

  7. Several temple officials are among the 13 people arrested on charges that include attempted murder.

  8. The fireworks that were involved were made locally by amateurs who used illegal chemicals.

  9. Kerala votes for its next government next month. Politicians were busy with campaigning when the disaster struck.

  10. The Puttingal Devi temple was built on the site of an ant hill where locals believe a goddess appeared centuries ago.
