At Kupwara, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti made an on-the-spot assessment of the situation. She also chaired a meeting of local officers which was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh.
Her party, the PDP, said it was "highly concerned" about civilian killings. Ms Mufti, it said, met Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and in a meeting with security chiefs has pressed for "time bound inquiry" and a "foolproof mechanism" to protect life and property while maintaining law and order.
The Centre has rushed 3,600 additional troops in the state to keep order. The central government is concerned over the loss of human lives in Jammu and Kashmir, a Home Ministry spokesperson said.
The mother of the 16-year-old girl has told NDTV that her daughter had panicked on seeing a jawan in the washroom. Hearing her screams, the locals had gathered and clashed with the police, claiming the securityman had molested the girl.
The girl's mother's words contradict a video of the girl's questioning by the police, released by the army earlier this week. In it, the girl is heard saying that a local boy had misbehaved with her. Her mother said she had been pressured to give the statement.
The girl's mother has also moved the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, which today asked the police to cite the law under which they have detained the girl.
Since the alleged molestation incident on Tuesday, protests have spiralled across Kashmir, including Baramulla town and other parts of central and north Kashmir.
Today, two persons were injured in Trehgam area of Kupwara district when security forces fired pellet guns to disperse stone-pelting protestors. The violence took place despite the curfew in Kupwara.
So far, five persons have died and 60 people, including 40 securitymen, have been injured in clashes across the state.
On Tuesday, three persons, including a young cricketer and an old woman had died in Handwara. In Kupwara, where a boy died and seven people were injured yesterday as security forces opened fire on a crowd of stone-pelting protesters.
