Nations That Provide Peacekeepers are Not Decision Makers: Sushma Swaraj at UN

Sushma Swaraj addresses the UN General Assembly.

New York: In her address to the United Nations General Assembly, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj focussed on the need to tackle terror. Responding to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's comments a day ago, she said talks and terror cannot go together. Pushing the case for reforms in the UN Security Council, she said nations that provide peacekeepers should have a bigger role in decision making.

Here are the top 10 quotes from her speech:

  1. Grateful to the United Nations for declaring Mahatma Gandhi's birthday as the International Day of Non-Violence.

  2. UN seems to be a passive organisation when it comes to quelling conflict in some corners of the world.

  3. We must ask ourselves if we have political will to craft alternatives to conflict and to pursue them with commitment.

  4. India has been the largest contributor to peace endeavors. It is lamentable that the country that provides soldiers for peacekeeping has little to no role in decision making.

  5. The future of the international community is now dependent on how we respond to the greatest threat that we face today: Terrorism. Countries that support terror must be made to pay a heavy price.

  6. The mastermind behind the Mumbai terror attacks are walking free. New attacks are taking place. Recently we have caught two Pakistani terrorists alive.

  7. These terror attacks are meant to destabilise India and legitimise Pakistan's illegal occupation of parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

  8. Talks and terror cannot go together. Give up terrorism and we will sit and talk. If the response is serious and credible, India is prepared to address all outstanding issues through a bilateral dialogue.

  9. As a woman and elected parliamentarian, it is my conviction that there is a shortcut to social change - empowering the girl child.

  10. India has always been a willing partner in global efforts to counter climate change. We will play our due role in reaching a meaningful, equitable and effective agreement in Paris.
