Can't Discuss Peace Under Shower Of Bullets: President Ahead Of R-Day

New Delhi: On the eve of India's 67th Republic Day, President Pranab Mukerjee said India's economic success has been the envy of the world during what he termed a difficult year. But he also said it was time to take note of the "grim instances of violence" that hit our "core values" of nationhood and in an oblique reference to Pakistan, said peace cannot be discussed "under a shower of bullets".

Here are his top ten quotes:

  1. Let us applaud what our democracy has achieved. Our finest inheritance, institutions of democracy, ensure to all citizens justice, equality, and gender and economic equity.

  2. When grim instances of violence hit at established values which are at core of our nationhood, it is time to take note. We must guard ourselves against the forces of violence, intolerance and unreason.

  3. There will be, among us, occasional doubters and baiters. Let us continue to complain; demand; rebel; this is a virtue of democracy.

  4.  We cannot discuss peace under a shower of bullets. Dialogue is the civilized way to bridge disagreement; ideally, should be a continual engagement.

  5. We must resolve complex edges of our geo-political inheritance with neighbours through peaceful dialogue.

  6. Human beings are best defined by a humane spirit; not their worst instincts.

  7. Nations will never agree on everything; but the challenge today is existential. If outlaws are able to unravel borders, then we are heading towards an age of chaos.

  8. India today is a rising power, a country fast emerging as a global leader in science, technology, innovation and start-ups.

  9. Year 2015 has been a year of challenges; during this year, the global economy remained subdued. India's economy also had to face the blowback.

  10. This year, with an estimated growth rate of 7.3 percent, India is poised to become the fastest growing large economy.
