The residence of Delhi bureaucrat Rajender Kumar was raided by the CBI today
New Delhi:
The man at the centre of a major flashpoint between Arvind Kejriwal and the Centre is senior bureaucrat Rajender Kumar, who has worked for the Chief Minister even in his past 49-day stint.
Here are 10 facts on Rajender Kumar:
Rajender Kumar, the principal secretary to the Chief Minister, has been accused of corruption in the purchase of computers. CBI has registered a case against him for alleged criminal conspiracy.
The CBI claims it was searching not the Chief Minister's office on the third floor of the Delhi Secretariat, but that of Rajender Kumar next door.
CBI sources say about Rs 13 lakh cash was found in raids on Rajender Kumar and another person today. Rs 3 lakh in foreign currency and Rs 2.4 lakh was allegedly found from Rajender Kumar's home.
Arvind Kejriwal alleges that the CBI raid was an excuse to search his office and find evidence against him for the Centre.
"Rajender Kumar is one of our most trusted officers. To raid him is to raid the CM," said Mr Kejriwal.
Rajender Kumar is a 1989 batch Indian Administrative Service officer who was appointed Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister in February, when the Aam Aadmi Party took power for the second time. Like Arvind Kejriwal, Mr Kumar is also an IIT alumnus.
Sources say a complaint was filed against Rajender Kumar by Ashish Joshi, who was sacked by Mr Kejriwal in May as member-secretary of the Delhi Dialogue Commission.
Ashish Joshi's complaint said the CBI should investigate Rajender Kumar's dealings when he was with the departments of education, IT and health in the Delhi government.
The CBI searched Mr Kumar's office and residence over complaints that certain private companies had benefited during his postings in the last five years.
Mr Kumar has been accused of "setting up" various companies to give work contracts without tenders, at a huge loss to the Delhi government. Rajender Kumar allegedly formed a company that was empaneled with Public Sector Units to get government work without tenders, the complaint alleges.
