A suspected Pakistani national was shot dead in Pathankot - the site of the recent terror attacks -- near the international border with Pakistan, sources told NDTV. The man's identity is yet to be ascertained, sources said.
Here are the latest developments:
Sources said three men were seen crossing the border around 6 am today at the Tash post in the Bemiyal sector. They had come around 50 meters inside the Indian territory under foggy conditions, sources said.
When challenged, they did not stop and the security forces opened fire in which one of the men were killed.
Though the other two were seen running away towards the Pakistani side, a combing operation is on in the area.
Sources said it is also being considered if the man was a villager. No arms were recovered from the dead man.
The entire area around Pathankot is on alert since the terror attack on the air force base earlier this month. Six terrorists, who infiltrated the area in two groups, were killed after an 80-hour operation. Seven security personnel were martyred.
The National Investigation Agency, which is probing the case, today held searches at four locations in Gurdaspur and two in Amritsar.
Sources said Punjab police officer Salwinder Singh and his two companions are likely to have visited the areas. Mr Singh has claimed that one group of terrorists, who entered the air base, had abducted him and hijacked his blue beacon car on December 31.
Mr Singh, whose gave conflicting versions of what happened that day, is currently undergoing lie detector test and certain behavioural tests.
The Pathakot attack was said to have been carried out by the Jaish-e Mohammed, a Pakistan-based terror group. Some leaders of Jaish-e-Mohammad have been detained.
Pakistan has started an investigation into the conspiracy after India provided evidence. The National Security Advisor level talks that were scheduled between the two nations following a decision to formally resume dialogue, has been put on hold.
