Here are 10 big developments in this story:
The Telangana bill was introduced in the state legislature this morning, provoking total chaos. Neither Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, nor leader of the opposition Chandrababu Naidu were present.
Both leaders have asked the Centre to reconsider its decision to split Andhra Pradesh into two states with Hyderabad as a shared capital for 10 years.
The Centre has over-ruled all objections. The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill 2013 has been cleared by the Cabinet.
The Andhra Pradesh legislature has been asked by the President of India to return the bill with comments by January 23.
The feedback is not binding on the Centre.
Legislators from Telangana were furious with today's protests by their counterparts from Seemandhra - the two other regions of Andhra Pradesh.
Telangana has been demanding statehood for decades; the Centre acquiesced in December 2009, but huge protests in Seemandhra forced the decision into paralysis.
The Congress is hoping that Telangana - which will get 17 of Andhra Pradesh's parliamentary seats - will reward it handsomely in the national election, due by May.
The party's leaders from Seemandhra - including Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy - have warned of a huge backlash in the 13 districts that will form the residuary state.
Legislators from Seemandhra, who oppose the bifurcation of the state, want to delay the process to ensure that Parliament is unable to take up the Bill before the national elections.
