The move in favour of Net Neutrality is seen as a big blow to schemes like Free Basics backed by Facebook.
New Delhi:
Telecom regulator TRAI on Monday barred operators from allowing differential pricing for data in India, backing net neutrality.
Here are the five big points from its order:
No service provider shall offer or charge discriminatory tariffs for data services on the basis of content.
No service provide shall enter into any arrangement, agreement or contract with any person that has the effect of discriminatory tariffs for data.
Reduced tariff for accessing or providing emergency services or at times of public emergency has been permitted.
A fine of Rs 50,000 per day on contravention of the regulation has been announced.
TRAI may undertake a review of the policy after two years or at an earlier date as it may deem fit.
