We Need a Concrete Way of Limiting Power: Pope Francis at United Nations

Pope Francis addresses the UN general assembly on Friday.

New York: Pope Francis today became the fifth pope to visit and address the United Nations, which is holding a summit on development. The Argentine Pope has won an avid following due to his reformist approach. The flag of Vatican -- one of the two non-member states of the UN -- was raised on the UN Building for the first time today. In his speech, which he delivered in Spanish, Pope Francis underscored the need to limit power and stop the abuse of environment and applauded the nuclear deal with Iran.

Here are 10 big quotes from his speech:

  1. This is the fifth visit by a pope to the UN. In my own name and that of the entire catholic community I express my heartfelt gratitude.

  2. The work of the UN set forth in its founding charter can be seen as the promotion of the rule of law based on the idea that justice is essential for universal peace. When UN charter is ignored, a true Pandora's box is opened.

  3. The experience of the last 70 years teaches that reform is necessary in the pursuit of the ultimate goal of granting all countries without exception a genuine equitable share in decision making process.

  4. We need a concrete way of limiting power. The world has so many examples of power that is badly exercised.

  5. A right of environment must exist. Any harm done to the environment is harm to humanity. The universe is the product of a loving creation. The misuse of creation begins when we see nothing else but ourselves.

  6. War is the negation of all rights, and a dramatic assault on the environment.

  7. Entire Middle East, North African And Other African Countries Have Been Forced To Witness Destruction.

  8. There is urgent need to work for a world free of nuclear weapons.

  9. The recent agreement on the nuclear question is proof of potential goodwill and of law, exercised with sincerity, patience and constancy. I express my hope that this agreement will bring forth the desired fruits.

  10. Economic and social exclusion is a denial of humanity and grave offence. The poorest are those who suffer from such offences.
