A recent photo of 1993 blasts convict Yakub Memon.
New Delhi:
Yakub Abdul Razak Memon, convicted for his role in the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai, was hanged a little before 7 am today at the Nagpur Central Prison. The Supreme Court had, just hours before, dismissed his plea against his hanging.
Here are the 10 facts on the death row convict:
Memon, 53, is a Chartered Accountant by profession.
In 2007, he was found guilty of conspiracy in the 1993 serial blasts - 12 almost simultaneous explosions had ripped through Mumbai on 12 March 1993, killing 256 people.
He was arrested at the Nepal border in 1994. He has been in jail ever since.
While in prison, Yakub Memon has acquired two masters degrees from Indira Gandhi National Open University - in English literature and in Political science.
Memon is the only one of 11 people whose death sentence in the case has been upheld. The sentences of the others were commuted to life imprisonment.
Memon is the brother of Ibrahim Memon, also known as Tiger Memon, who is one of the main accused in the case and a fugitive wanted by India since he left the country in 1993.
Among others accused in the case are India's most-wanted Dawood Ibrahim and his brother Anees Ibrahim. Dawood is said to have plotted the 1993 blasts in Dubai along with the Memon brothers and others.
In 2007, Yakub was found guilty of both plotting the attack and executing it. He was held guilty of distributing arms and ammunition, detonators and explosives to other accused and also of funding terror activities.
The death sentence handed to him by the anti-terror court was upheld first by the High Court and then the Supreme Court in 2013.
President Pranab Mukherjee rejected Yakub Menon's mercy petition last year.
