11-Storeyed Under-Construction Building Marked Unsafe, To Be Demolished In Chennai

The demolition will take place on Wednesday from 2pm to 4pm.

Chennai: Authorities in Chennai will demolish a 11-storeyed under construction building on Wednesday, two years after an adjoining similar block collapsed killing 61 people.

The demolition exercise will take place from 2 pm to 4 pm.

In a statement, the police have asked residents living at Moulivakkam, 18 km south-west of Chennai, to temporarily move to a designated hall. They've also arranged free transport for this.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had ordered demolition of this structure calling it unsafe.

Besides structural defects, the building built close to the Moulivakkam Lake had also violated norms, according to authorities.

The one man Commission that probed the June 2014 tragedy recommended several steps including changes in the Constitution of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority and mechanism to monitor under construction mega projects to avert disasters like this.
