3 Women Students Run Over As Tanker Ploughs Into College Crowd In Chennai

Three young women were run over by a speeding water tanker near their college in Chennai.

Chennai: Three young women were run over and a few others were wounded as a speeding water tanker ploughed into a crowd of students near a college in Chennai on Thursday.

Police arrested the driver of the tanker later in the night. Initial interrogation revealed the driver was not under the influence of alcohol, police said. Investigation is underway in the incident.

The accident took place very close to the Chellamal Women's College, where the three, Chitra, Gayathri and Ayesha, studied commerce.

"We have a bus stop at the college but no buses stop. We have made many complaints. Students are forced to walk over a km to get to college," said VG Vijayalakshmi, the college principal.

Women's shoes and other belongings were scattered at the accident site.

Soon after the accident, an angry crowd protested and blocked traffic in the area.

Teachers of the college also protested on the main road demanding more police to regulate traffic and a speed breaker outside their campus.
