Fourteen years ago, geological scientist Gnana Bharathi won his battle against a spinal cord injury that paralysed him chest downwards. But the battle to get recognition for his work is still on.
With MSc and MTech degrees in Geology and Mineral Exploration, the scientist, who is an employee of the Central government, suspects that he is being discriminated because of his disability.
Mr Bharathi had been transferred to the Central Leather Research Institute in Chennai, from the Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research, Dhanbad, Jharkhand. For nine years, he was made to work in the CLRI ibrary.
Then, after an 8-year battle, the scientist, who is pursuing a doctorate degree in environment, got his wish to work in the Environment and Technology division of the same organisation.
But now he is back in the library - following a change in top management.
"I'm capable and more than capable," said the man who has published papers, filed for patents and earned a post-graduate diploma in Intellectual Property Rights after his accident.
"I'll prove that I'm more than capable if given a chance. Those who are disabled can achieve anything. If they want to work, let them work," he said.
Director Dr B Chandrasekaran told NDTV, "Those who come on request transfers can't demand everything. We can consider a transfer only after his PhD. But he should first win the confidence of others in the department so they would accept him".
His disability has not put down Mr Bharathi. He rides all over the city on a three-wheeler he designed himself. He's comfortable behind wheels. "I do not want to be idle while the government pays me good salary," he said.
