Chennai:
The body of a 22-year-old medical student from Chennai who died two days after a hair transplant surgery was exhumed on Friday.
Doctors performed a post-mortem at the cemetery in Trichy where he was buried. The results are yet to be made public.
Santosh's parents allege the anesthetist at the private hair transplant centre did not stay till the end of the 10-hour procedure on the 15th of May.
Police had earlier filed a case of suspicious death. Based on any medical evidence the post-mortem may reveal, they would decide on their next course of action. So far they've made no arrest.
Authorities say the centre had a licence only to run a hair salon, which too turned invalid a couple of months ago. They add it did not have a sterile place or an operation theatre to tackle any complications.
The final year medical student had felt shy of his slight baldness and had paid Rs 73,000 for the procedure. He developed fever the same evening and died two days later at a private medical college in Vellore.
Health officials say hair transplant is a surgical process and should be performed in a hospital environment.
They would soon recommend the state government to enact a tough law to regulate private centres offering hair transplant.
