Chennai: An auto driver in Chennai has been honoured this week for his remarkable act of generosity.
A few months ago, K Ravichandran was driving a passenger who had a heart attack in his auto. Mr Ravichandran, 48, rushed the passenger to hospital. Doctors recommended a pace-maker.
"Even though the total treatment cost was a subsidised ₹47,000 from its initial cost of ₹1 lakh, the passenger's son, who flew in from Kolkata, was unable to pay due to shortage of funds," reports this site.
"The passenger's son had only Rs 15,000 after spending on the flight tickets. Plus, I learnt that they were not affluent. I decided to pledge my autorickshaw, the only property I owned and managed to pay the balance," said Mr Ravichandran to the New Indian Express.
Mr Ravichandran then hocked his auto to help pay for the treatment.
The Anna Auto Welfare Trust in Chennai gave him an award this week for his humanity and bravery.
