Chennai:
A Chennai-based engineer has been arrested for allegedly sharing pornographic photographs of a child on a WhatsApp group on July 29.
The WhatsApp group comprised of employees of the company the engineer worked for. The complaint was filed by a woman colleague who is a member of the group.
The Cyber Crime Cell, which investigated the case, has registered cases under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) and the Information Technology Act. The investigators have also recovered the mobile phone allegedly used for filming and uploading the obscene pictures.
Over the last two months, three cases have been registered in Chennai, in connection with uploading child pornographic material on social media sites. In May, a man was also arrested after a Facebook group of suspected pedophiles was spotted with pictured of children and sexually explicit comments. Facebook too had removed the page following public outcry.
Last week, the Centre blocked over 850 portals with adult content on grounds of morality and decency, but partially revoked the order after an angry backlash on social media and amid a raging debate on censorship in a democracy.
The government then ordered Internet service providers to shut down sites that promote child pornography.
