Chennai:
The hunt for a perfect Christmas tree this season, it seems, is bound to leave store owners having a merrier holiday season than others.
"These days, families are opting for two or three Christmas trees to be put in different rooms of their homes," says SP Selvaraj, co-owner of the 16-year-old Ravees Evergreen at Egmore.
The milling crowd inside the store that boasts of imported Christmas trees and brightly coloured decorations is proof enough that the countdown has truly begun.
Another employee adds, "Last year, we had coloured trees. But this year, people want something different as a novelty." So he explains, "We have 'France tree' which is more busy and made of poly-porpin. The branches are not straight like a regular Christmas tree."
"Fancy options or just your plain green plastic house tree, the market for these Christmas must-haves have definitely increased in the last one year," says S Prince, Partner at Santhosh Stores.
"I would say sales of Christmas trees have gone up 20-25 per cent this year," he specifies.
It seems that for those intent on the aesthetics of decoration this season, specific themes are steadily picking up as well. These range from classic colour combinations such as 'blue and silver' and 'red and gold' - a trend among city corporates, as well as novelty trees custom-made to catch your attention.
One city mall has created a 13-foot tall Christmas tree replacing the bare essentials of green branches with a rainbow of teddy bears.
