At least four people have died in accidents involving the metro project in the past three years alone. All of these deaths have happened when girders, scaffolding or cranes collapsed.
An eyewitness at the site of the accident said, "There were no safety measures. There was no net to prevent the scaffolding from falling on the road below."
Officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited have said an inquiry would be ordered into the incident.
