Chennai: A two-hour long power cut would come to force in Chennai from today. Tamil Nadu is witnessing a power shortage of around 2500 MW, and Chennai alone accounts for around thirty per cent of the total consumption in the state.
Other districts in the state are already experiencing power cuts for around four hours every day.
The power deficit in the state hovered between 2500 MW to 4000 MW over the last two years. This has earlier resulted in power cuts up to twelve to sixteen hours in many parts of the state.
A few days ago Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa blamed the electricity crisis on the power stations run by the Central Government.
The power crisis has adversely hit the industry in the state. In the industrial belt of Coimbatore, hundreds of micro industries were forced to shut and according to industrial experts, thousands of workers lost jobs.
Arch-rivals, the ruling AIADMK and the opposition, the DMK, blame each other for the crisis, alleging the other did not do enough to increase production of power in the state.
A few power projects are nearing completion in the state and the government hopes once they become operational, the situation would improve.
