Chennai: A day after violence broke out on the campus of Sathyabama University outside Chennai following a student's suicide, the university officials have shut the campus down and have asked the students to vacate the hostel.

The campus witnessed violence and arson last night. Students torched furniture of the university hostel and held noisy protests outside.

A police officer said, "The management has declared holiday for a month. The situation is under control." A university official, however, did not confirm if the campus would be closed for a month.

Students of Chennai's Sathyabama University torched furniture at the hostel and held noisy protests.

Ragamonica, an undergraduate student, was found hanging in her hostel room.

Fire fighters said the blaze in the hostel has been extinguished, although the students did not allow fire tenders inside the campus.

The police said they are investigating the matter. The post-mortem of the student's body will be done today.

The 30-year-old private university has witnessed violence in the past too over issues of restriction for students to interact with the other gender, dress code and approval issues from the All India Council for Technical Education.
