Film Aims To Raise Awareness on Organ Donation

Dignitaries at the luanchof the film by director Vijay, aimed at spreading awareness on organ donation.

Chennai:

In just two minutes, film director Vijay's 'Thank You' gets its message across on how a single brain dead person can give life to seven other people.

At the launch of the film, Dr Samiran Nundy, Editor of RaxaDoctor, said, "We have a low rate of donation, and films like this will help a lot."

India lags behind in organ donation due to a lack of awareness. Less than one organ donation is reported for every million people. Europe and the US touch 30 for every million.

Prof Elizabeth Pomfret, President, International Liver Transplantation Society, says, "The key in promoting organ donation is that there has to be trust in the society that their gift is being used fairly."

Prof Mohamed Rela, Director of the Institute of Liver Disease and Transplant Surgery at Global Hospitals, who has launched this movement estimates, "If our population is one billion. Even if our donations are one third of western donation, then 10,000 people can donate. In a year at least 70,000 lives can be saved by organ donation."

In India, Tamil Nadu leads in organ donation and transplants. The green corridor of the Chennai police for transporting donated organs quickly is now being replicated across the country.

The state's Health Secretary Dr J Radhakrishnan says, "We are taking a step further. We have also put an organ transplant authority at the level of Chief Minister for faster clearances, making the procedure more simple."

Death can be life giving. A small attempt that could help save hundreds of lives.
