Chennai: Passengers of a Mass Rapid Transit System train bound for Chennai Beach from Velacherry today had a narrow escape after one of the bogies caught fire near the elevated Perungudi station, officials said.
No one was injured, however, some passengers complained of suffocation. The route connects the IT corridor with the heart of the city. But because it was a holiday, the train did not have many passengers.
"The incident occurred around 8.35 am near Perungudi. The train was moving towards Beach station. Since, it is a holiday (on account of Ayudha Pooja), there were not many passengers," a top official told PTI.
After the fire was extinguished, the compartment was separated and the train left for its destination.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
