Heavy Rain Brings Huge Losses to Chennai Residents

Chennai: Latha Vijayan, a resident of Chennai’s Varadharajapuram area, has suffered a huge loss after her house was flooded following the heavy rain in the city over the past few days.  Latha, who works as a domestic help, said "Like earlier it would be nice if they (Government) give TV, mixer - grinder etc."

Not far away at a relief centre, the Anthuvan’s family is counting its losses. The heavy rain  destroyed all their property including sound system equipment worth rupees eight lakh, his only livelihood (what’s his profession), he said. 
 "The government should help us to start afresh. Otherwise we can't do anything". 

A tea seller Saravanan, who had started his dream grocery store, has lost all he had purchased for his shop from his saving worth Rs 80,000. 

"I will have to borrow money and start again. It may take more than a month," he said.

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has announced compensation for farmers and fishermen. Those who lost ration cards and other certificates will get duplicate ones, but no word yet on people like Latha and Saravanan who too want their losses compensated.

The toll from rain-related incidents in Tamil Nadu increased to 120 yesterday, as rains lashed many parts of the city, raising fears of more inundation.
