In class 6? Time for IIT classes

Chennai: Summer holidays might be drawing close but most teenagers in Chennai won't be packing their bags for a vacation this time around. Instead of playing football or cricket, they would probably be studying calculus and higher levels of algebra and geometry.

Parents in Chennai continue to push the envelope when it comes to competitive exams, specially the Joint Entrance Exams (JEE), the gateway to Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). So, class VI students are signing up for IIT coaching classes around this time of the year.

"To get success we have to sacrifice a bit. I am a bit sad that I didn't get my holidays. But after sacrificing only I have got the second rank in the state," said 14-year-old student Vineet.

Tutors say that there is a spurt in the number of students taking up these courses in order to crack the National Talent Search Examinations, science and Math Olympiads and even the JEE.

"Unless they start at a very early age, it is very difficult for them to beat competition. So that message has gone very clearly to the public and the message has gone very clearly to the students and are coming and enjoying the classes over here," said Pavan Kumar, Deputy Centre Head of FIITJEE Chennai.

"By the time they come to class 9 and 10, their IQ level and basics are so strong that they are able to take a firm decision whether they want to go engineering or medical. So this programme is a stepping for setting up their future," said Rajesh Raman, Professor, FIITJEE.

Parents say that youngsters today carry the burden of such intense, early learning, fairly well.

"I don't think it's a burden for him. Because of this coaching class, he is getting more marks in all subjects," said Vineet's mother, Anima.

Most of these kids might miss out on all the IPL action this year. But their parents are not complaining. They feel this is the only way they will lead in the rat race to be at the top of the table in competitive exams.
