Chennai: The Chennai police have arrested the husband of a 26-year-old woman techie who committed suicide on Monday night, by jumping off the sixth floor of her office building.
Earlier, based on her husband's complaint, the police believed depression could be the reason for her suicide. The husband told the police that she was under depression as the couple did not have a child even fourteen months after wedding. But they arrested him soon after her parents alleged dowry harassment.
The Inspector of Tambaram police station, Albin Raj, told NDTV "her parents have not told what was the exact demand by him or his family, but they say dowry harassment must have pushed her to commit suicide". He also added "we will soon alter the case and there will be a revenue sub-divisional officer (RDO) probe too as this suicide has happened within seven years of marriage".
According to the police, the husband is working on a project in the aviation sector. Both had met during a course and "it was a love cum arranged marriage".
An employee of Cognizant Technology Solutions, according to her husband, on Monday night the woman had come to her office in the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) to apply for leave after they decided to visit her brother; but ended her life there.
