Chennai: Passengers of a Mass Rapid Transit System train bound for Chennai Beach from Velacherry today had a narrow escape after one of the bogies caught fire, officials said.
No one was injured, they said.
"The incident occurred around 8.35 AM near Perungudi. The train was moving towards Beach station. Since, it is a holiday (on account of Ayudha Pooja), there were not many passengers," a top official told PTI.
"When the incident occurred the driver stopped the train immediately. One of the bogies in the middle caught fire and it is damaged," he said.
Two fire tenders were used to douse the flames, he said.
"Traffic on this route has been suspended. An inquiry has been ordered to identify the cause of the incident," he added.
Recently one of the bogies of an MRTS train got derailed on this route.
